The Univeristy of Ghana at Legon
USAC classes, offices, and housing are located at the University of Ghana at Legon. Founded in 1948 as the University College of the Gold Coast, for the purpose of providing and promoting university education, learning, and research, it became the University College of Ghana upon the attainment of Ghana’s independence in March 1957.
During the initial years, it operated under the auspices of the University of London, which supervised its academic programs and awarded University of London external degrees to successful students. By an act of Parliament in 1961, the University College of Ghana attained sovereign university status with authority to award its own degrees, and thus became the University of Ghana. It is the oldest and largest of the five universities in the country.
The University of Ghana campus resembles large college campuses in the U.S., with orange stucco roofs, tree-lined streets with medians, and roundabouts to control traffic speed. The campus is quite large, sprawling over 50 acres.
