Art History and Spanish Studies
Why Study in Madrid?
The summer Madrid program is ideal for students who would like to study Spanish and/or Art History. Classes are taught at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos Vicálvaro Campus, which is inviting, modern and student-friendly. It provides a great learning and social atmosphere.
Madrid is a fascinating city and has a vibrant culture that provides the perfect setting for intensive language study. The program offers two 4-week sessions as well as an intensive language approach that allows you to complete one semester of university foreign language study in 4 weeks or a year in 8 weeks.
You may participate in one or both sessions and choose from courses in the academic areas of Intensive Language and Art History Studies. Students who opt for Spanish Studies will have ample opportunity to practice their newly learned skills both inside and outside the classroom. Bustling pedestrian areas, busy cafés, intense nightlife and diverse neighborhoods make Madrid a socially engaging metropolis. Students who choose Art History Studies will have the good fortune of visiting three world-renowned art museums: the Prado Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and the Centro de Arte Reina Sofía National Museum. These museums, which are the pride and joy of Madrid, comprise what is commonly referred to as the "Golden Triangle" of art, as all three are located within a mile of each other. A more privileged place to study art isn't easily found!
In addition to the academic strengths of the program, the program offers the possibility of participating in a plethora of extracurricular activities. Cultural and sporting events abound, day trips to nearby cities are recommended and Madrid´s nightlife is unequalled by any other European capital.
The Madrid program also has a Resident Director who is responsible for the USAC office abroad and overall operations of the program: securing appropriate student housing, hiring outstanding faculty, organizing exciting field trips and optional tours and overseeing your general well-being.
Álvaro Carredano, a native of San Sebastián, Spain, is the Resident Director for the Madrid program and is a twenty year veteran of USAC. He earned his Masters degree from the University of Oviedo and is fluent in Spanish and English. Álvaro, along with program assistants Susan and Gabriela, is always ready and willing to assist students and provide an important support system while you become acclimated to Spanish culture. You are always welcome in the office and are encouraged to visit with staff on a regular basis.
