International Business, Engineering and Spanish Studies

Why Study in Bilbao/Getxo?

The summer Bilbao/Getxo program is ideal for students who wish to develop an international business and/or a bilingual career. Bilbao has transformed itself dramatically over the last decade. It has moved from an industrial city to a dynamic, modern, cutting edge, cosmopolitan banking and service center with world class museums and art galleries, gleaming subways, futuristic music halls and a modern airport. Both Bilbao and Getxo offer a variety of cultural events, museums and sports such as surfing, rowing, soccer, hiking, bicycling and more. Because of its natural oceanside beauty, USAC students typically live in Getxo.

The summer Bilbao/Getxo program offers two 3-week sessions as well as an intensive language approach that allows you to complete a semester of university foreign language coursework in 3 weeks, or a year in 6 weeks. You may participate in one or both sessions and choose from three academic areas: Intensive Language, Business and Cultural Studies.

However, the academic courses are only part of the value of a summer abroad. Participation in formal and informal activities, such as field trips, optional tours and field studies, cultural events and village festivals also constitute an integral part of the experience.

The Bilbao/Getxo program has a Resident Director who is responsible for the USAC office abroad and overall operations of the program: securing appropriate student housing, hiring outstanding faculty, organizing exciting field trips and optional tours and overseeing your general well-being.

Dr. Ibon Zamanillo is the Resident Director for the Bilbao/Getxo program and is a ten year veteran of USAC. Ibon holds an MS in Industrial Engineering from the Engineering School of Bilbao and graduated Cum Laude with a Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of the Basque Country. Ibon will meet the group flight at the airport, arrange for you to be taken to your housing and provide an on-site orientation. The USAC Bilbao/Getxo staff – Arantxa, Mane and María – also provides additional assistance and resources while you are on the program.
