Spanish, Sociology/Health and Latin American Studies

Why Study in Puebla?

The summer Puebla program is ideal for students interested in studying the rich historical, sociological, cultural and archaeological values of Mexico. Puebla is one of Mexico’s oldest cities from the Spanish colonial era, filled with 17th and 18th-century European architecture and art. It has three major archaeological sites in its region including Teneapa Pyramid, one of the largest pre-Columbian structures in the Americas, and it has been the center of political and social movements for hundreds of years. This rich history makes it an excellent location for Archaeological, Sociological and Latin American Studies. Through formal coursework and personal interaction with the host culture, you will also greatly expand your language skills and knowledge of Mexican society.

The summer Puebla program offers two 4-week sessions as well as an intensive language approach that allows you to complete up to one semester of university foreign language coursework in 4 weeks, or a year in 8 weeks. You may participate in one or both of the sessions and choose courses from the following subject areas: Intensive Spanish Language, Latin American Studies and Sociology/Health Studies.

However, the academic courses are only a part of the value of a summer abroad. Participation in formal and informal activities, such as field trips in and around Puebla and visits to cultural events and village festivals also constitute an integral part of the experience.

The Puebla program has a Resident Director who is responsible for the USAC office abroad and the overall operations of the program: helping students with housing, hiring outstanding faculty, organizing exciting field trips and optional tours and overseeing your general well-being.

Ignacio Díez Elortegui is the Resident Director for the Puebla program. Ignacio is a ten year veteran of USAC and is fluent in Spanish and English. He will meet the group flight at the airport, arrange for you to be taken to your housing, provide an on-site orientation as well as support and resources while you are on the program.
