Irish Studies
Why Study in Galway?
The summer Galway program is ideal for students interested in learning about Irish studies in a lively, student-oriented city on Ireland’s west coast. Galway's magical combination of ancient history and contemporary culture makes it a great location for Irish studies.
The Galway program consists of one 5-week session offering academic coursework in literature, history, theatre, music and the Gaelic language taught by established Irish and U.S. scholars. Many of these courses include enticing field trips offering hands on experience with the subject matter. These include walking tours of Galway, outings to the Connemara gaeltacht (or Irish-speaking area), live theatre and guest lectures by leading playwrights and directors, private Irish film screenings and private in-class music concerts by leading traditional musicians and singers. Participation in additional program field trips and the optional tour of Dublin also form an integral part of the program.
The summer Galway program has a Resident Director who is responsible for the overall operations of the program: securing appropriate student housing, hiring outstanding faculty, organizing exciting field trips and optional tours and overseeing your general well-being.
Dr. Mark Quigley is the Resident Director for the Galway program and is a four year veteran of USAC. He writes and teaches on a variety of topics in modern Irish literature and has lived and studied in Ireland for a number of years. He will provide you with an orientation of Galway and the university, direct you to your housing, arrange field trips and social events and provide additional support while you are on the program.
