German and European Studies

Why Study in Lüneburg?

The summer Lüneburg program is ideal for students interested in learning the German language and focusing on European studies – specifically Germany’s role within the European Union. Through formal coursework and personal interaction with the host culture, you will greatly expand your language skills and knowledge of German society. Lüneburg offers students the quality of life of a smaller community without sacrificing the cultural resources and activities of a large metropolitan city. Lüneburg is also only 30 minutes away from the former East Germany, providing a unique vantage point from which to study the dynamics of reunification.

The summer Lüneburg program offers two 5-week sessions as well as an intensive language approach that allows you to complete up to one semester of language study in 5 weeks, or a year in 10 weeks. You may participate in one or both sessions and combine courses from the following subject areas: Intensive German Language, and German and European Studies. The program also includes an optional 4-day tour of Berlin.

However, the academic courses are only a part of the intended value of a summer abroad. Participation in cultural activities, festivals and field trips to Hamburg, Lübeck, Travemünde, Bremen and a tour to the former border between East and West Germany also form an integral part of the program.

The Lüneburg program has a Resident Director who is responsible for the overall operations of the program abroad: securing appropriate student housing, hiring outstanding faculty, organizing exciting field trips and optional tours and overseeing your general well-being.

Sören Köppen, a native of Northern Germany, is the Resident Director for the Lüneburg program and is a three year veteran of USAC. He earned his Masters degree in economics and social sciences and previously taught political science courses on the program. Sören will meet the group flight at the airport, organize transportation to your housing, provide an on-site orientation and additional support and resources while you are on the program.
