Why Study in Cork?

The Cork program offers students the opportunity to enroll in a wide range of courses in a variety of disciplines at the University College Cork (UCC), one of the oldest universities in Ireland. Just a few of the choices are: Archaeology, Celtic Civilization, Irish Studies, Music, Applied Psychology, Applied Social Sciences, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Commerce and Technology and Law. A small number of internship opportunities are also available. You may stay for a semester or a full year. Ireland remains a unique country with its own traditions, values and views of the world. Time in Ireland will challenge you personally, open your eyes to different ways of looking at the current topics in our world and enable you to experience Irish culture and history.

The University College Cork has an international reputation for its research work, particularly in the areas of fundamental and technological science. We recommend you enroll in “Early Start” courses, unique to the university. Some of the courses offered are Irish Archaeology, History and Modern Ireland, Law, Literatures in Ireland, Irish Folklore and Ethnology, Management and Marketing in the European Union, Irish Ecosystems and Music in Ireland – all of which give you insight into Ireland’s past and present. Many classes also include field trips, which bring alive the class material.

You may also be interested in the Certificate in Irish Studies, which is a yearlong interdisciplinary program for visiting international students and draws upon a number of academic disciplines. The program provides a comprehensive overview of the rich indigenous Irish cultural tradition over two millennia. Spring semester students may opt for the Certificate in Political Issues in Ireland Today, a program focusing on the current issues facing Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

The Cork program is administered in the U.S. by the USAC Central Office and in Cork, Ireland by a Program Coordinator who is responsible for the overall operations of the program abroad: answering questions about student housing, assisting with registration and overseeing your general well-being.

Louise Tobin is the Program Coordinator for the USAC Cork program. She and the staff at the UCC International Education Office will provide you with an orientation of Cork and the UCC, direct you to your housing and arrange social events.
