Spanish, Basque and European Studies
Why Study in San Sebastián?
The San Sebastián program opens an academic window on the Spanish and Basque people, introducing you to the rich diversity of Spain and offering a truly multicultural experience. San Sebastián has the highest level of bilingualism of any of the area’s cities: all of its inhabitants speak Spanish, and one third speak Basque as well. In addition to American students, European students also participate in the San Sebastián program.
This program is ideal for students interested in Spanish or Basque Studies. The Spanish studies program allows you to choose from language, history, literature and cultural courses in a setting that realistically reflects the diversity of Iberia. The Basque dimension introduces you to the Basque people, their contributions to European and American history and their cultural and linguistic uniqueness. You may stay for one semester or a full year and supplement these courses with additional electives in European Studies and Culture. Many of these courses are shared with local students. Our intensive language approach also allows you to complete up to two years of university language coursework in only one semester.
The San Sebastián program has a Resident Director who is responsible for the USAC office abroad and overall operations of the program: securing appropriate student housing, hiring outstanding faculty, organizing exciting field trips and optional tours and overseeing your general well-being.
Dr. Patricia O’Connor, a United States native, is the Resident Director for the San Sebastián program. Patricia earned a Doctorate from the University of Cincinnati and is fluent in Spanish and English. She will meet the group flight at the airport, arrange for you to be taken to your housing and provide an on-site orientation. The USAC San Sebastián program staff – Aizpea, Cecilia and Tito – are also available throughout your stay for support and resources.
