International Business, Spanish and Cultural Studies

Why Study in Bilbao/Getxo?

The Bilbao/Getxo program is ideal for students who wish to develop an international business career and/or a bilingual career. You may stay for one semester or a full year and focus on studying Spanish Language and Cultural Studies or International Business. Our intensive language approach allows students to complete up to one year and a half of university foreign language coursework in only one semester, so you may meet Spanish major or minor requirements. The program also offers the opportunity to do internships.

However, the academic coursework is only part of the value of a semester or year abroad. Courses are complemented by the opportunity to experience the society and culture of the Basque Country through personal interaction with local students and field trips to sites of social, historic, artistic and economic interest. You also have the opportunity to participate on an optional tour of Madrid.

The Bilbao/Getxo program has a Resident Director who is responsible for the USAC office abroad and overall operations of the program: securing appropriate student housing, hiring outstanding faculty, organizing exciting field trips and optional tours and overseeing your general well-being.

Dr. Ibon Zamanillo is the Resident Director for the Bilbao/Getxo program. Ibon holds an MS in Industrial Engineering from the Engineering School of Bilbao and graduated Cum Laude with a Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of the Basque Country. He has been a faculty member at the University of the Basque Country for ten years, and an esteemed business professor for the USAC Bilbao/Getxo program since 2002. Ibon will meet the group flight at the airport, arrange for you to be taken to your housing and provide an on-site orientation. The USAC Bilbao/Getxo staff also provides additional assistance and resources while you are on the program.
