The Program

Japan is a fascinating country rich in culture, history and a diverse environment; the combination of which produces one of the most distinctive societies in the world. Students have the unique opportunity to combine academic coursework, intensive language studies and the experience of living in a culturally rich city.

Students may enroll for one or two semesters. You have the opportunity to study five levels of Japanese language, from beginning to advanced, and a broad range of other courses taught in English in the departments of: Science and Information Technology; Biotechnology; Business Law and Economics; and Culture, Education and Society. Students whose Japanese is at an advanced level can take courses taught in Japanese in various subjects together with other Japanese students.

The academic courses are only part of the intended value of a semester or year abroad. Participation in formal and informal activities, such as field trips to local historical sites and festivals, and short homestay programs also form an integral part of the program. These weekend activities are planned and organized by the volunteer work of the HUSA Program staff.

The Hiroshima University Study Abroad (HUSA) Program has an exchange agreement with 54 universities in 20 countries all over the world. USAC is one of the partner institutions. Hiroshima University offers the academic program for the HUSA students including the Japanese language courses. The HUSA Program also arranges the dormitory housing so that students can reside in Hiroshima economically.

Dr. Taiji Hotta, Associate professor of the International Student Center and the Graduate School for International Development and Cooperation, and Dr. Naomi Tsunematsu, Associate professor of the International Student Center and the Graduate School of Education at Hiroshima University, are in change of the HUSA Program. The HUSA Program staff are committed to providing excellent service to students.
