The Program

Scholastic excellence, top quality research, industry partnerships, tailored courses and of course, fun, are among the factors that attract students from all around the world to this program. The Deakin University program offers you the opportunity to enroll in a wide range of courses from the following academic faculties: Arts; Business and Law; Education; Health; Medicine; Nursing and Behavioral Sciences; and Science and Technology.

Students may choose from coastal campus locations near the world famous Great Ocean Road, Australia’s best beaches or in Melbourne, a cosmopolitan capital boasting world-class sporting and recreational facilities and events. Each campus offers a distinct and unique living and learning experience and provides the services, facilities and student-centered approach for which Deakin is renowned. The unique internships available on many campuses allow students to work in a variety of disciplines including Public Relations, Environmental Science, Journalism, Sociology, Performing Arts and Business.

Students will find the School of Australian and International Studies unique and intriguing. It provides an overview of Australian culture in urban and regional areas and also examine the effects of the rapid changes in the post World War II period, including a focus on Aboriginal land rights, women, and the environment. As you may already realize, Australia is on its own timetable given its location in the world. You may participate in one or both of the semesters, the first running from February to June, the second from July to November.

How can you pass up Deakin’s unique three-day orientation that takes you to the beach or the bush? It is especially designed for you to help make the transition into Australian university life as easy as possible. In this relaxed and informal setting you will be introduced to various aspects of Australian culture and life at Deakin. The program features a range of activities like mountain biking through the pristine wilderness, guided hikes along cliff tops overlooking the Southern Ocean, Grampians National Park, surfing lessons, plus workshop sessions on successful integration. Arriving in a new country can be a challenging time and our program provides a fun and informative launch pad for you to achieve the maximum out of your time abroad. You will have time to recover from jet lag in a safe and secure environment, and staff is able to assist you at all hours.

On the third day of orientation, you will return by bus to your campus of study and will spend the following days attending a campus-specific Enrollment and Orientation Program where you will formally enroll and be introduced to the local community.

The Melbourne program is administered in the U.S. by USAC and in Melbourne, Australia, by Deakin University’s International Office. The Program Coordinator in the Deakin International Office is Linda Vaughan, a native of Scotland, who worked in the United States and is an Australian citizen. She and the Deakin International Office staff will provide you with an orientation of Victoria and Deakin, direct you to your housing, assist with registration, arrange social events and oversee your well-being.
