Chinese and International Business Studies
The Program
The Shanghai program combines learning through formal academic coursework and direct personal experience gained through visits to sites of historical and cultural interest, tours, and an integrated living experience on campus. Academically, this program offers you a high quality educational experience with an introduction to the economic and business environment of China and East Asia. While learning the Chinese language and business logistics during the week, you will be able to take in dozens of art exhibitions, sport competitions, movies, museums, musical events, nightclubs, and more.
There are two options for combining courses from the following subject areas: International Business and Intensive Chinese language.
The first option is to concentrate on International Business and take Elementary Chinese I in order to learn basic communication skills while in Shanghai.
The second option is to concentrate on intensive language by enrolling in one of the intensive language tracks that allow you the opportunity to complete one and a half years of Chinese language coursework in just one semester.
All students will be required to enroll in one Chinese language course and The China Phenomenon in order to assimilate you more effectively into your living and learning environment.
Since these options and subject areas are not exclusive of one another, students may combine courses for up to a total of 18 credits. The academic courses are only a part of the value of a semester or yearlong program. Participation in formal and informal activities, such as field trips to museums and weekend trips form an integral part of the program.
An integrated campus life helps you assimilate into Chinese society and culture and enhances the academic value of the program. You will experience residential student life on campus with its wealth of offerings: sports, student clubs (film, theatre, music, conservation and so on), and other campus activities. Additionally, the downtown campus of Shanghai University allows easy access to world-class entertainment, restaurants, museums and cultural events.
The Shanghai program has a Resident Director who is responsible for the USAC office abroad and overall operations of the program: securing appropriate student housing, hiring outstanding faculty, organizing exciting field trips and optional tours, and overseeing the students’ well-being.
You Sha, a Chinese native, is the Resident Director for the Shanghai program. She earned a Masters degree from the University of Nevada, Reno and is fluent in Chinese and English. You Sha will meet the group flight at the airport, take you to your housing, provide an on-site orientation, support and oversee your general well-being while on the program.
