Chinese and International Business Studies
The Program
The summer Shanghai program offers two five-week sessions. Students may participate in one or both summer sessions making this program ideal for those unable to participate on semester or yearlong programs. The main focus of this program is to provide an introduction to the economic and business environment of China and East Asia. While learning Chinese language and business logistics during the week, you will be
able to take in dozens of art exhibitions, sport competitions, movies, museums, musical events, nightclubs and more.
There are several options for combining courses from the following subject areas: International Business and Intensive Chinese language. The first option is to concentrate on International Business. One 3-credit course may be combined with a 2-credit Introduction to Chinese Language: Part I course and, if desired, one 1-credit elective. Another option is to concentrate on language in one session (4 credits) and business in the other session (6 credits).
A third option is for students who wish to concentrate on intensive language by taking 3 to 5 credits of Chinese in each session, with the opportunity to complete up to an entire year of language study in 10 weeks. In addition, one 1-credit elective may be taken each session.
All students are required to enroll in a minimum of one 2-credit Chinese language course in order to assimilate more effectively into their living and learning environment. Since these options and subject areas are not exclusive of one another, students may combine courses for up to a total of 6 credits.
The academic courses are only one aspect of the intended value of a summer abroad. Participation in formal and informal activities, such as field trips to museums and weekend trips form an integral part of the program.
An integrated campus life helps you assimilate into Chinese society and culture and enhances the academic value of the program. You will experience residential student life on campus with its wealth of offerings: sports, student clubs (film, theatre, music, conservation and so on) and other campus activities. Additionally, the downtown campus of Shanghai University allows easy access to world class entertainment, restaurants, museums and cultural events.
The Shanghai program has a Resident Director who is responsible for the USAC office abroad and overall operations of the program: securing appropriate student housing, hiring outstanding faculty, organizing exciting field trips and optional tours, and overseeing the students’ well-being.
You Sha, a Chinese native, is the Resident Director for the Shanghai program. She earned a Master's degree from the University of Nevada, Reno and is fluent in Chinese and English. You Sha will meet the group flight at the airport, take you to your housing and provide an on-site orientation.
