Spanish, Sociology/Health and Latin American Studies
The Program
The Puebla program introduces you to the rich historical, cultural and archeological values of Mexico. The yearlong program is especially helpful in terms of language study, becoming integrated into Mexican society and getting to know different parts of the country. However, you may choose the fall or spring semester only. (Please request a summer catalog if you are also interested in the USAC Mexico summer program.)
Students will study the Spanish language and the complexities of Mexican and indigenous societies through a wide selection of academic courses, as well as through personal interaction with the host culture. Puebla also offers a unique setting in which sociology and health studies students can complete core courses while studying Spanish.
The academic courses are only a part of the value of study abroad. Participation in formal and informal activities, such as field trips in and around Puebla, the optional Ancient Cultures of Mexico Field Study course to sites in central and southeast Mexico, and visits to cultural events and various museums constitute an integral part of the experience.
The Puebla program has a Resident Director who is responsible for the USAC office abroad and the overall operations of the program: helping participants with housing, hiring outstanding faculty, organizing exciting field trips and optional tours and overseeing the students’ well-being.
Ignacio Diez Elortegui is the Resident Director for the Puebla program. Ignacio is a 10-year veteran of USAC and is fluent in Spanish and English. He will meet the group flight at the airport, arrange for you to be taken to your housing and provide an on-site orientation. The USAC Puebla staff also provides assistance and resources while you are on the program.
