Spanish, Ecological and Latin American Studies
The Program
The Heredia program is ideal for students who are committed to learning the Spanish language while studying the diverse cultures of Latin America and the complexities of its societies through formal coursework and personal interaction with the host culture. Previous USAC students have reported that a yearlong program was especially helpful in terms of language study and in becoming integrated into Costa Rican society. However, you may choose to attend fall or spring semester only. (Please request a summer catalog if you are also interested in the USAC Costa Rica summer programs.)
Students enroll in a language track that may fulfill foreign language requirements, Spanish minor and major requirements and enhance your ability to communicate during your stay in Costa Rica. You may complement your language curriculum by taking courses in literature, political science, economics, history, art history, biology, ecology and dance.
The academic courses are only a part of the value of a semester or yearlong program. Participation in formal and informal activities, such as field trips in and around San Jose, to the Caribbean and Pacific coasts, the rain forest, nature reserves, and parliament and governmental entities as well as experiencing cultural events and village festivals, form an integral part of the program.
The Heredia program has a Resident Director who is responsible for the overall operations of the program abroad: securing appropriate student housing, hiring outstanding faculty, organizing exciting field trips and optional tours, and overseeing the students’ well-being.
Dr. Carlos Salas, a Costa Rica native, is the Resident Director for the Heredia program. Carlos earned his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas and is fluent in Spanish and English. Carlos will meet the group flight at the airport, take you to your housing, and provide an on-site orientation. The USAC Costa Rica office staff–Jenny and Carlos–also provide support and resources while you are on the program.
