International Business and Spanish Studies
The Program
The summer Bilbao/Getxo program offers two three-week sessions, and each offers the option of a four-day tour and field study to Madrid. You may participate in one or both sessions. This program is ideal for those unable to participate on semester or yearlong programs.
The uniqueness of the Bilbao/Getxo program allows students to develop an international business career and/or a bilingual career. Students may focus on two specific academic areas: Spanish language and cultural studies or International Business. Since these options and subject areas are not exclusive of one another, students can combine courses for up to a total of four credits per session, or five credits per session by adding the optional Madrid Field Study course at the beginning.
This allows students to complete one semester of language studies in one session or a complete year in two sessions. For those who have already taken Spanish, or those who wish to study exclusively in English, this program offers courses taught in English.
These academic windows are complemented by the opportunity to experience the culture through personal interaction with local students and field trips to sites of social, historic, artistic and economic interest. Previous students have reported that two sessions were especially helpful for language study and becoming integrated into Spanish society. However, you may choose to attend Session I or Session II only.
The Bilbao/Getxo program has a Resident Director who is responsible for the USAC office abroad and overall operations of the program: securing appropriate student housing, hiring outstanding faculty, organizing exciting field trips and optional tours, and overseeing the students’ well-being.
Dr. Félix Menchacatorre, a Bilbao
native, is the Resident Director for the Bilbao/Getxo program. He has been with USAC for over 20 years. Félix earned a JD, MBA and Doctorate in Spanish Literature from the University of Cincinnati. Fluent in Spanish and English, he will meet the group flight at the airport, arrange for you to be taken to your housing and provide an on-site orientation. The USAC Bilbao/Getxo program staff – Aranxta, Esther and María – also provide assistance and resources while you are in Bilbao/Getxo.
