Spanish, Ecological and Latin American Studies

The Program

The summer Puntarenas program offers two five-week sessions. This program is ideal for those unable to participate on semester or yearlong programs.

There are three options for combining courses from the following subject areas: Intensive Spanish language, Ecological and Latin American studies. The first option is to concentrate on intensive language by taking 3 to 5 credits of Spanish in each session, with the opportunity to complete up to an entire year of language study in 10 weeks. In addition, one or two 1-credit elective courses may also be taken each session in history, dance, culture, literature or cuisine.

The second option is for students who would prefer to focus on Latin American or Ecological studies, specifically Tropical Conservation and Ecology. One 3-credit course may be combined with a 1-credit Introduction to Spanish Language course and if desired, one or two 1-credit elective courses in history, dance, culture, literature or cuisine.

The third option is to combine the course offerings to meet your distinct interests. Since these options and subject areas are not exclusive of one another, students may combine courses for up to a total of 6 credits. For example, a student may take a 3-credit language course with a 3-credit Ecological studies course.

The academic courses are only a part of the intended value of a summer abroad. Participation in homestays and field trips to the Pacific coast, the rain forest and volcanoes, as well as experiencing cultural events and village festivals, also form an integral part of the program.

The Puntarenas program has a Resident Director who is responsible for the USAC office abroad and the overall operations of the program: securing appropriate student housing, hiring outstanding faculty, organizing exciting field trips and optional tours, and overseeing the students’ well-being.

Dr. Carlos Salas, a Costa Rica native, is the Resident Director for the Puntarenas program. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas and is fluent in Spanish and English. Carlos will meet you at the airport and provide an on-site orientation. The office staff, Lucy, Sebastian and Gerardo, also provide additional support and resources while you are in Costa Rica.
