Chinese and International Relations Studies
The Program
The summer Chengdu program offers two, five-week sessions each with the option of a four-day tour to Beijing. Students may participate in one or both summer sessions making this program ideal for those unable to participate on semester or yearlong programs.
There are three options for combining courses from the following subject areas: Intensive Chinese language, Chinese studies and International Relations. The first option is to concentrate on intensive language by taking 3 to 5 credits of Chinese in each session, with the opportunity to complete up to an entire year of language study in 10 weeks. In addition, one or two 1- credit elective courses may also be taken each session in calligraphy, tai-chi, culture or history.
The second option is for students who would prefer to focus on Chinese studies. One 3-credit course may be combined with a 1-credit Introduction to Chinese Language course and if desired, one or two 1-credit elective courses in calligraphy, tai-chi, culture, cuisine or history.
The third option is for students interested in international relations. Typical core political science and business courses with an Asian focus are offered each session and may be complemented by Chinese language or Chinese studies courses.
Since these options and subject areas are not exclusive of one another, students may combine courses for up to a total of 6 credits each session. For example, a student may take a 3-credit language course with a 3-credit Chinese studies course. The academic courses are only one aspect of the intended value of a summer abroad. Participation in formal and informal activities, such as field trips to museums and weekend trips to the mountains, also form an integral part of the program.
The Chengdu program has a Resident Director who is responsible for the USAC office abroad and overall operations of the program: securing appropriate student housing, hiring outstanding faculty, organizing exciting field trips and optional tours and overseeing the students’ well-being.
Wentao Song, a Chinese native, is the Resident Director for the Chengdu program. She earned a Masters degree from Sichuan University and is fluent in Chinese and English. She has experience working with international students for more than a decade and will provide knowledgeable assistance during your stay in China.
