Spanish and Latin American Studies

The Program

Santiago's urban and natural framework, its mountainous terrain and its proximity to Chile's central coastline is ideal for experiencing the nature and culture of the most southern country in the world. Students study the Spanish language and contemporary Chilean society through a wide selection of academic courses, as well as through personal interaction and immersion in the host culture.

You enroll in the appropriate language track, which can fulfill foreign language requirements and enhance your ability to communicate during your stay in Chile. To further your language skills, a Chilean university student will be available to become your conversation partner. You may complement your language curriculum by taking courses in literature, political science, anthropology, cinema, economics, history, art history, sociology, women's studies and other disciplines. Previous students have reported that the yearlong program was especially helpful in terms of language study, and in becoming integrated into life in Santiago. However, you may choose the fall or spring semester only.

The academic courses are only a part of the value of a semester or year abroad. Participating in visits, field trips and the optional Latin America and its Cultures Field Study course to northern and/or southern Chile, are a unique part of the USAC program. Excursions in and around Santiago, and visits by speakers in many of Chile's fastest evolving fields also constitute an integral part of this program.

The Santiago program has a Resident Director who is responsible for the USAC office abroad and the overall operations of the program: securing appropriate student housing, hiring outstanding faculty, organizing exciting field trips and optional tours, and overseeing the students' well being.

Dr. Luis Andrés Figueroa, a Chilean native, is the Resident Director for the Santiago program. Fluent in Spanish, French and English, Luis will meet the group flight at the airport, take you to your housing, and provide an on-site orientation. USAC Chile staff, Lisa and Brenda, are also available for assistance and resources while you are in Chile.
