Spanish, Basque and International Business/MBA Studies
The Program
The summer San Sebastián program offers two five-week sessions. You
may participate in one or both of the sessions, with the option of a four-day
visit to Madrid. This program is ideal for those unable to participate in semester
or yearlong programs.
There are two options for combining courses from the following subject areas:
Intensive Spanish/Basque language and International Business/MBA studies. The
first option is to study language intensively by taking 3 to 5 credits of Spanish
or Basque in each session, with the opportunity to complete up to an entire
year of language study in 10 weeks. In addition, one or two 1- credit elective
courses may also be taken each session in culture, Spanish cinema or field study.
The other option is for students interested in International Business courses
at a high undergraduate or MBA level, which may be complemented by Spanish language,
and/or elective courses. One possibility is to meet some of the requirements
of your MBA or undergraduate program while completing one semester of Spanish
language - think of the competitive business edge you will take back to the
U.S.
Students may combine courses from the above options for a minimum of 3 credits
and a maximum of 6 credits per session. Four to five credits per session is
recommended but 6 may be taken in one session provided that the student is willing
to spend ample time in class and on daily homework.
Participation in formal and informal activities, such as field trips to both
the French and Spanish Basque country, and visits to folkloric events and village
festivals constitute an integral part of the experience.
The San Sebastián Summer program has two Resident Directors who are
responsible for the USAC office abroad and overall operations of the program:
securing appropriate student housing, hiring outstanding faculty, organizing
exciting field trips and optional tours, and overseeing the students' well being.
Both Dr. Félix Menchacatorre, a Bilbao, Spain native, and Dr. Patricia
O'Connor, a native from the US hold doctorates from the University of Cincinnati.
They are both fluent in English and Spanish and will arrange for the group flight
to be met at the airport and will provide an on-site orientation. The USAC San
Sebastián program staff: Aizpea, Cecilia and Tito, are also available
for assistance and resources while you are in Spain.
