Chinese and International Business Studies
Program Overview
The summer China program offers 2 five-week sessions, and each offers the option
of a four-day tour to Beijing. You may opt to participate in one or both sessions.
This program is ideal for those unable to participate on semester or yearlong
programs.
There are four options for combining courses from the following subject areas:
Intensive Chinese language, Chinese studies, International Business, and elective
courses. The first option is to concentrate on intensive language by taking
3 to 5 credits of Chinese in each session, with the opportunity to complete
an entire year of language study in 10 weeks. In addition, one or two 1- credit
elective courses may also be taken each session in calligraphy, tai-chi, culture
and history.
The second option is for students who would prefer to focus on Chinese studies,
specifically Chinese history and culture. One 3-credit course may be combined
with a 1-credit Introduction to Chinese Language course and if desired, one
or two 1-credit elective courses in calligraphy, tai-chi, culture and history.
The third option is for International Business students. Typical core business
courses with an Asian focus are offered each session and may be complemented
by Chinese language, Chinese studies, and/or elective courses.
The fourth option is to combine the course offerings to meet your distinct interests.
Since these options and subject areas are not exclusive of one another, students
may combine courses for up to a total of 6 credits. For example, a student may
take a 3-credit language course with a 3-credit Chinese studies course.
The academic courses are only one aspect of the intended value of a summer abroad.
Participation in formal and informal activities, such as field trips to museums
and weekend trips to the mountains, form an integral part of the program.
The Chengdu program has a Resident Director who is responsible for the USAC
office abroad and overall operations of the program: securing appropriate student
housing, hiring outstanding faculty, organizing exciting field trips and optional
tours, and overseeing the students' well being.
Wentao Song, a Chengdu native, is the Resident Director for the China program.
She holds a Masters degree from Sichuan University. Fluent in Chinese and English,
Wentao will meet the group flight at the airport and provide an on-site orientation.
