Field Trips for Pau, France
You are encouraged to participate in the included program field trips. These excursions generally take place on weekends. In addition to the including program field trips, you'll also have field trips as part of many of your courses and have numerous informal activities that expose you to the local culture as well.
Dates and exact locations are at the discretion of the Resident Director and they vary from session and session and semester to semester. Common destinations include the following.
Béret Museum and Pyrenees National Park
Visit the Béret Museum in the town of Nay to see how the famous French berets are made and to try a few on! Afterwards you will go up into the Pyrenees mountains for a breathtaking hike through the amazing Pyrenean landscape to the mountain lake, Lac de Gaube.
This visit to one of the best known and most beautiful French cities includes a guided tour as well as a chance to spend some time in the Old Quarter with its splendid eighteenth-century facades, riverfront, and animated shopping streets.
French Basque Country: Biarritz and St-Jean-Pied-de-Port
This trip starts with a visit to Biarritz, the most famous seaside resort in the area where Queen Victoria and the Empress Eugénie often visited. The trip also includes the picturesque Basque town of St.-Jean-Pied-de-Port, capital of the Basse-Navarre region and one of the most beautiful and picturesque towns in the Basque country, with its fourteenth-century cathedral and seventeenth-century fortress.
French Basque Country and Spain (overnight trip)
The excursion begins with a guided tour of the picturesque Basque city of Bayonne. Then we move on to the Spanish city of San Sebastián where we will spend the night, tour the city and the Old Quarter. Last but not least, we stop in St-Jean-de-Luz, a charming fishing and resort village along the coast, where you will see the house of Louis XIV and the church St-Jean-Baptiste, where Louis XIV wed Marie-Therese.
Gavarnie: Pyrenees Mountains
Enjoy a trip to one of the most stunning mountain valleys south of Pau. We will hike up into the naturally formed amphitheatre, dominated by snow-topped peaks, to see the spectacular views and continue on to the waterfall.
St.-Bertrand-de-Comminges and prehistoric caves of Gargas
We will tour one of the oldest and most picturesque villages in France with Roman ruins and an amazing Cathedral and will also visit nearby unique prehistoric caves.
Toulouse and Carcassonne (overnight trip)
This visit to Carcassonne, one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe, includes a guided tour of the Château Comtal and the fortified medieval city. In Toulouse, we will spend the night and enjoy this city, known for its architecture of rose brick buildings, the Romanesque Basilique of St. Sernin, and the Augustinian Monastery.
