Field Trips for Brighton, England

During the semester, the staff in the University of Brighton American Office organize field trips for USAC students. They are optional, fun, and competitively priced. We encourage you to participate in them. Payment can be made to the University of Brighton upon arrival and completion of a booking form. A combination of these trips is offered each semester, and in order to run they are subject to minimum numbers. The entrance fees to museums, exhibitions, castles, and the cost of guided tours are included, but some meals are not. These trips are based on a group rate and are extremely good value for the money. They are great fun, stress free, and a great way to enjoy hard to reach parts of England and France. Students who participate in the trips say they are one of the best features of the Brighton program, a great way of making friends, and enjoying the sights without the stress of planning.

Dates and exact locations are at the discretion of the staff and they vary from semester to semester. Common destinations include the following.

Bath and Stonehenge

A weekend trip to Bath, Stonehenge, and Bristol. No one knows why the ancient stone circle of Stonehenge was built, though it probably was constructed as a place of worship. Check it out for yourself and see what you think. Bath is a World Heritage Site, famous for its elegant streets, Roman baths and Georgian architecture. A visit to the lovely town of Bristol, ranked as one of the 10 must-see cities in the world by DK Eyewitness Travel Guides, is also part of the trip. Accommodation is in a four-star hotel and includes dinner and full English breakfast.

Bodiam Castle

Tour by coach through the Sussex and Kent countryside to picturesque Bodiam Castle, a medieval, moated castle built in 1385. Then it is on to the old smugglers’ fishing town of Rye. You’ll have time for lunch—it’s a great place for fish and chips—and to explore the many antique markets and individual shops.

East Sussex

A day tour of the countryside and places of scenic and historical interest east of Brighton will take you to Cuckmere Haven, where the River Cuckmere flows into the English Channel through the chalk cliffs of the Seven Sisters; Beachy Head, a famous lighthouse situated at the bottom of chalk cliffs; and Alfriston, a picturesque Sussex village on the Cuckmere River. You will see many Tudor inns, houses and early Norman churches. There’s also a stop at Battle Abbey, the site of the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Lunch will be at a country pub.

London

An escorted day tour will show you some of the main sights of England’s capital city: Buckingham Palace, Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, 10 Downing Street, Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, and Leicester Square. You’ll experience the London transport system as well as lots of walking, so wear comfortable shoes!

Oxford and Stratford-Upon-Avon

Join a weekend trip to Oxford, the famous ancient university town, and Stratford-Upon-Avon, Shakespeare’s birthplace. The field trip includes a guided tour of Stratford and theatre tickets for a Royal Shakespeare Company performance at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre on Saturday evening. We’ll also visit Warwick Castle, a beautifully preserved medieval castle. Accommodation is in a typical family guesthouse in Stratford and includes a full English breakfast.

Paris

A long weekend in Paris, spent at a central Parisian hotel (within walking distance of the Eiffel Tower). Walking tours, a ride on the Seine by night, and visits to numerous sites, including the Louvre, Notre Dame, Arc de Triomphe, Moulan Rouge, Sacre Coeure, the Champs Elysee, and the Palace of Versailles, will give you a lovely taste of the City of Lights.
