Its basic function is research and teaching in Cuban and Latin thought, educational policy, environmental policy, social movements and emancipatory alternatives, integration and cooperation in Cuba and Latin America, theory and history of socialism, democracy, governance, and human rights. The institute maintains close ties with the Universidad de la Habana and other universities in the country, the US, Europe, and Latin America.
